Announcement:

  1. The Journal of Visual Arts Research CALL FOR PAPERS. This special issue will seek to do two things. First, it will attempt to recommence artistic thought and practice in fidelity with the complex formulations and conceptual tools mobilized by Deleuze and Guattari. Second, it will intervene with the field of contemporary art education in order to produce new trajectories for thinking both its contemporary deadlocks and future potentials.   2. 2. The ARTErra is a rural art residency structure that support and encourage artistic creation and production.
    Housed in a remarkably small rural village, you will find in ARTErra physical spaces and tools for the reception of the project / proposal of the artist or collective of different artistic disciplines.
    With privileged contacts with some institutions and companies try to enhance and ensure a artist in residency to respond the needs and expectations of the projects accepted.

    International Physical Theatre Laboratory 
    The scholarship amount is 300 EUR and covers part of the participation fee.

Discussion: What do you think if InAEA hold an annually “International Student Machinima Competition”?

After I taught SL and OpenSim by myself for about 1 year, I think, if there is a formal competition for students to join might enhance their interest in building in SL. What do you think about it?

Liliann Ling: I think it is a good idea. but we need to differencing it from other machinima competitions

Marylou Goldrosen: Can we have another category too-- Digital Storytelling--more open? Digital Stories can be Powerpoint too and just as good--another category

SageStage Minotaur: I think of machinima as collaborative--and like promoting collaboration. It would be interesting to develop criteria for jurying these and showcasing. However, I am not keen on competitions.

Sandrine Han: There might have 2 categories: 1. Filming category, and 2. Building category. In Filming Category, students might not need to build everything by themselves; they can find good locations to take good machinima. (This is for new SL students.) In Building category, students need to make all scenes and outfits by themselves. (This is for more advanced students.)

Now we can have the third categories, digital story telling!! :)

when I was teaching OS, they are not so interested, but after I told them I will put their videos in SL, and people in the world can see that, they become more active! That's why I think, we can have a machinima show or competition this kind of thing...

SageStage Minotaur: For criteria of machinima that my students create with Ryan Shin's students it is: Active participation of script writing on Google.doc with leadership, engagement, and numerous contributions. Evidence of cultural narratives of global, local, or personal-as-political explorations or issues with socially just considerations.

It is good to have 2 or more classes view and comment on each others, or work together to create--this also motivates. Other criteria include:

Object is political and pedagogical in that it is designed to bring new awareness to others' about local or global issues. And, Evidence of purposeful avatar acting.

Marylou Goldrosen: Can we have a junior category too? No all students are as advanced as yours?

Sandrine Han: Yes, different levels!

Sandrine Han: Should the competition have a theme every time? Should the competition have a theme every time?

Liliann Ling: I think we can have both a theme and a free one

SageStage Minotaur: Would you assign that students submit to the competition or would this be outside of coursework? what designates "student"

Marylou Goldrosen: Is the machinima shot only on Second Life, or are we opening it to other sites?

SageStage Minotaur: MACHINIMA>Collaborations that Sustain Difference is a project to elicit micro-cultural views that are specific and unique (i.e., they sustain difference), yet also are shared within or part of macro-cultural knowledge. The act of meaning-making from micro-cultural practices sustains as well as changes the macro-cultural.

Sandrine Han: I was thinking about Second Life and Open Sim, what do you think? other games as well?

SageStage Minotaur: I think any game/virtual world environment. I think machinima's are most interested when mixed reality.

Sandrine Han: OK! that will be more cool!!

SageStage Minotaur: Students did mixed reality machinimas in my course and it raised such deep discussion about reality and subjectivity.

SageStage Minotaur: Really was transformative learning in that new ways of thinking were constructed by the students.

Sandrine Han: The time for this competition is in July. I think it is better for students who want to refine their class machinima homework for this competition. I also think in July everyone might have time to participate in this. What do you think? July is our traveling month?

SageStage Minotaur: Some questions regarding organizing the competition. Is remix and collaboration valued? What would encourage participation?

Perhaps selected ones showcased at EMIG session or meeting.

Sandrine Han: should we have award system?

Winner. Each category has Gold Medal, Silver Medal, and Bronze Medal. All participants will get a certificate from InAEA. What will the winner get? L$?

Liliann Ling: that's a good idea

Sandrine Han: do you think the certification is a good idea?

SageStage Minotaur: It could be a recognition to add to resume.

rather than physical materials--gold, silver, bronze--maybe different metaphors of value.

Liliann Ling: If we can get some school support, it would be helpful to encourage participation

Liliann Ling: then, we might have to have different age category

Sandrine Han: yes, different age category, but one more category is the mixed category

SageStage Minotaur: Liliann and Kristy--you two would be good as jurors. What would your juror statement be? What would you value?

Liliann Ling: I think it need to be in accordance with our goal

Sandrine Han: ideas, building, filiming... different goals different value...

SageStage Minotaur: As art educators our goal for machinima competition is ... to foster creativity with using virtual worlds as medium. ...

This is a general statement to get us thinking. I would be more interested in the goals I listed previously.

Fiskars exhibition challenges viewers to find new uses for objects and ideas

 

 

FIELD TRIP: Hsuan Chuang University Visual Communication Design Students’ 3D Animation Class Open Sim Movie Presentation. This is my students’ work this semester. Each movie and the whole world are made by only one student. I told them to build their dream world.
